During 2012, a research activity was undertaken within the IO Center project IO 1, "Teamwork and capabilities" to study teamwork challenges within IO teams. A particular production optimisation meeting in one asset of an oil & gas company was studied to identify challenges related to teamwork in the IO setting. The meetings included onshore and offshore locations collaborating through use of videoconference technology. The regular participants belonged to four different departments. It was assumed that in this complex meeting situation, with collaboration across both locations and disciplines, they would experience some teamwork challenges. The purpose of the study was to identify these challenges and derive recommendations for how IO teamwork could be improved.
Findings and recommendations were presented to the relevant line leaders in the organisation in the end of 2012. Based partly on the results from this IO Center study, changes were made to the way the meeting was conducted in early 2013. In late 2013 the IO Center researchers returned to the same production optimisation meeting to learn about the implemented changes and the effects of those changes.
